Using Primary Sources in Urban History Research

The Library of Congress (LOC) defines primary source as the raw materials of history, original documents and objects which were created at the time under study. Primary sources, while distinct from secondary sources that retell, analyze, or interpret events in a specific time and place, are the focus of evidence-based scientific studies. They testify to the time and place of the period to which they belong. These features make their primary sources the most important reference source for urban history research.

This training program, which we have prepared based on the importance of primary sources in urban history research, will handle primary sources in three different modules: archival materials, archaeological and ethnographic works, and architectural works and monuments.

The aim of the educational program is to provide the necessary skills in developing historical thinking skills for researchers working in the field of urban studies, revealing the relationship between time, space, and human elements in research, and accessing, evaluating, and using primary sources effectively.
