Abstract:

Invited by S. I. Aralov, who served as the Ambassador of Soviet Russia to Ankara at the time, the artist Yevgeni Y. Lansere visited Turkey in 1922. The initial pages of Lansere’s work “A Summer in Ankara 1922,” adorned with 62 black-and-white paintings, begin with impressions of the Black Sea coasts and Trabzon, the journey through the İnebolu pass, and continue with colorful depictions of Ankara during his stay at the newly opened Russian Embassy. The year 1922, when positive developments were taking place in Turkey-Soviet Russia relations, was also a period of diplomatic crises. Therefore, Lansere perceives Ankara differently from the towns in Anatolia, and in his mentioned work, he strives to reflect the unifying and reconciling aspects of the city and the people he encountered here.
